Q: What is the Enneagram?
A: The Enneagram symbol (9 pointed offset star) dates from at least Pythagoras, but its actual first use remains a mystery. Its association with 9 types of human behavior (personality) began in the 1960's with Oscar Ichazo. Oscar studied spiritual work in South America and Asia before creating the Arica School in Peru and presenting the Enneagram symbol with its associated 9 personality types to the world. Psychologists from the US and elsewhere investigated this work in the seventies, and brought a version of it back to the mainland. On the surface the Enneagram appears to be a revisioning of the "seven deadly sins". These (now nine) "passions" or vices were the basis for the dark side of every type of personality expression possible.  For every darkness there is light and quickly the types were fleshed out with virtues and overall spiritual concepts called "Holy ideas" by other author/researchers.

In actual field work - where it matters the most - the Enneagram gives folks  a "lifeline" to a foundational system that makes unpacking (sometimes tricky) personality elements actually possible. The depersonalization of behavior that occurs when you realize 800 million other people rise and fall with your same tendencies really makes the Enneagram an effective coaching tool. While it is a deep system for those who desire the whole truth, its fundamentals around behavior and counter-behavior are valuable and easily understood. The Enneagram as 9 types of behavior are not yet a hundred years old and much more is likely to be understood regarding them by then.
